In the 90s … texting involved paper and a pen … … our selfies were Polaroids ... … our favorite music was on mix tapes. Sex was dangerous, music was raw, and falling in love felt nostalgic. We were friends and lovers. We thought we knew everything. We knew nothing. We were here. Set in the early 1990s, a time before the internet, social media, and smart phones, We Were Here is the prequel to Geoducks Are For Lovers. This book can be read as a standalone.

MELISSA'S REVIEW: 4 STARS

So, Daisy Prescott is probably one of the nicest human beings on the planet. She has this unassuming, quiet and thoughtful personality, which is exactly the way I would describe her writing. Her stories are authentic and rich with imagery, humor and romance and her characters are extremely well developed and relatable. In We Were Here the reader will be delighted to meet the characters they fell in love with in her Modern Love Story series. Based in the early 90's, we get to witness friends Maggie, Selah, Gil, Ben, Jo, Lizzy and Quinn in college in a series of shorts. Their relationships feel real and lasting and their experiences are relatable to any reader. Their stories are about first love, first heartbreak, sex, experimentation, and self discovery, many of them shared and some not. The impression I am left with is that this group of friends were lucky to find such meaningful relationships and I was envious of them as they cultivated these relationships with intelligence and thoughtfulness. I loved the numerous 90's pop culture references expertly placed throughout each story and the song titles given to each chapter. I found myself reminiscing the entire time and signing song lyrics in my head wanting to dig out my old box of mixtapes. Daisy skillfully made these additions feel necessary and without them the characters and stories would not have felt as dynamic and lively. They are as much a part of the story as the characters themselves. Although there were multiple stories written, they all seemed to orbit around one main story, or relationship, between friends Maggie and Gil. Their friendship is amazing and heartfelt and I found myself rooting for them the whole time. I don't want to say too much but, I think there's a book for them out there somewhere, and I can confidently assure you that you'll be just like me, a curious cat digging through Daisy's library wanting more! I definitely recommend this to anyone who grew up in the 90s, and who love stories about true friendships and true love.
