Review
How can I simultaneously have everything and nothing to say about this book? I don’t know how Amy Harmon does it but her story telling has quickly become my gold standard. Her stories make me think and allow me to feel a vast range of emotions and Infinity + One is no exception.
This is my third Amy Harmon book and I absolutely loved it! I could feel the connection between Bonnie and Finn immediately. Their story of adventure, healing and redemption unfolding among the pages filled me with happiness and hope and in the end had me crying for the beautiful connection Bonnie and Finn shared.
Bonnie Rae Shelby, a self-proclaimed hillbilly, is a pop-country superstar. She is surrounded by fame and fortune yet no matter the number of people on her team, records sold, or dedicated fans, she struggles with feelings of sadness and loneliness brought on by the loss of her twin sister. She wants to escape, to get away from it all, and finds herself on the edge, ready to fall.
Infinity “Finn” Clyde is a genius, good with numbers. Within the first few pages of meeting him, it is clear that his genius is balanced by a silence and strength that had me enthralled with his mind before ever making a connection to his heart. Like Bonnie Rae, Finn finds himself wanting to get away, to escape his regrets, sadness and loneliness brought on by his own deep losses. He sets off for Las Vegas but his path quickly intersects with that of Bonnie Rae’s. Call it fate, call it destiny but in the end, what brings them together takes them on a journey of happiness, redemption, healing, and courage brought on by their love for one another.
I loved, and personally connected with, the way Amy has laced this story with mathematics. I devoured the way Finn compared the curve of Bonnie’s cheek to a parabola, the way he would twist an argument over a paradox into a humorous punch line with his brother, the constant evaluation to what infinity + one really equaled and simply the way he would “talk math” to Bonnie Rae, his own version of bedtime stories. Every instance of mathematics found within the pages filled my math-nerd heart. I also enjoyed the way Amy was able to make connections between the original Bonnie and Clyde to the story of Bonnie and Fish. In her doing so, I found it easy to make the connections and draw parallel comparisons between the two.
The most memorable part of this book for me was how complimentary Bonnie and Finn were to one another; her sass to his serious, her impulsive to his calculated, her sound to his silence. I truly admire the way Amy portrayed their connection and found myself the most emotional while reading the heartfelt and heartbreaking aspects of their relationship. In the end, I believe in Bonnie and Clyde.
If I could Give Infinity + One more than five stars I would. A memorable must read that will stay with me infintely.
